On sleep debt, and what actually repays it

August 1, 2026 · 2 min read · The Weekly Root

Most people think of sleep as a nightly reset. The evidence says it is closer to a loan: miss a few hours and the debt compounds, quietly, in attention, glucose control, and mood.

What the research shows

A meta-analysis of sleep restriction studies finds that cognitive deficits accumulate linearly across nights of partial deprivation. Six hours a night is not 75% fine. It is a debt.

A practical weekend

  • ·Pick a wake time you can keep every day.
  • ·Go to bed when you are genuinely sleepy, not when the clock says you should.
  • ·If you need a nap, keep it under 30 minutes and before 3pm.

Sleep is a practice, not a purchase. Begin where you are.
